Panel Discussion: Genocide Through the Media Lens

Experts discuss Gaza coverage and accountability

Join Amnesty International Austria and Standing Together Vienna for an expert panel that provides and overview of the German-speaking media coverage on the genocide in Gaza committed by Israel.

The panel will discuss how the genocide in Gaza is reported, why language matters, and what responsible coverage looks like.

The event will be held in English. Admission is free!

The panel will feature:

• Melina Borčak is a Bosnian-German journalist, author, and filmmaker, working on topics such as anti-Muslim racism, media criticism, Muslim feminism, and discrimination-sensitive language. She is the author of the Guidelines for Accurate Reporting and Speaking about the Genocide in Srebrenica, for the Memorial Center Srebrenica.
• Shoura Zehetner-Hashemi is the executive director of Amnesty International Austria. She is a lawyer and activist in the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement and on global human rights.
• Raimund Löw is an Austrian historian, journalist and publicist, known for his work as a foreign correspondent at ORF, as well as a commentator at the weekly newspaper Falter.
• Moderated by: Viola Raheb is a Palestinian scholar of religious studies, lecturer, writer and Senior Fellow at Bruno Kreisky Forum für internationalen Dialog.

EXPERT*INNEN DISKUTIEREN ÜBER DIE BERICHTERSTATTUNG ZU GAZA UND ÜBER VERANTWORTUNG

Amnesty International Austria und Standing Together Vienna laden zu dieser Podiumsdiskussion ein, die einen Überblick über die Berichterstattung der deutschsprachigen Medien zum Völkermord in Gaza durch Israel gibt.

Die Podiumsteilnehmenden diskutieren, wie über den Völkermord in Gaza berichtet wird, warum Sprache wichtig ist und wie verantwortungsvolle Berichterstattung über einen Genozid aussieht.

Die Veranstaltung wird auf Englisch durchgeführt. Eintritt ist kostenlos!

An der Podiumsdiskussion nehmen teil:

• Melina Borčak ist eine bosnisch-deutsche Journalistin, Autorin und Filmemacherin, die sich mit Themen wie antimuslimischem Rassismus, Medienkritik, muslimischem Feminismus und diskriminierungssensibler Sprache beschäftigt. Sie ist Autorin der Guidelines for Accurate Reporting and Speaking about the Genocide in Srebrenica für das Memorial Center Srebrenica.
• Shoura Zehetner-Hashemi ist Geschäftsführerin von Amnesty International Österreich. Sie ist Juristin und Aktivistin in der Bewegung „Frau, Leben, Freiheit” und setzt sich für globale Menschenrechte ein.
• Raimund Löw ist ein österreichischer Historiker, Journalist und Publizist, bekannt für seine Arbeit als Auslandskorrespondent beim ORF sowie als Kommentator beim Wochenzeitung Falter.
